Hostelling, to a great extent, isn’t a popularity contest. It’s about going against the grain somewhat, about getting off the normal tourist track and seeking out more singular experiences than the average traveler might. But the fact remains that even though hostellers tend to be more intrepid travelers than most, it’s still nice to have a little bit of a sense of security when you’re booking a hostel in an unfamiliar city that tells you other people before you have liked the place.
Which is why a list of Berlin’s most popular hostels is not meant to be some kind of hostel pageant but instead is designed to help give you an indication of which hostels get consistenly high marks from previous guests and tend to fill up more quickly. Of course, what makes a hostel popular isn’t always going to be the same criteria. Finding a hostel in any given city is relatively easy, but finding a hostel you can book with confidence knowing it’s among the best is no easy feat. In a city full of hostels, the newcomer EastSeven stands out for the consistently high marks it gets from past guests. There are larger and more famous hostels in Berlin, but none with a better location. The EastSeven is right in the trendy Prenzlauer Berg area of the former East, surrounded by bars, cafes, and restaurants, with plenty of cheap options for the backpacker crowd. You’ll find close and convenient public transportation, which makes a big difference in a sprawling city like Berlin that is far too big to see effectively on foot. Add in free Wi-Fi and good rates, even on private rooms, and that seals the deal.
 

Bunking down in Berlins best hostels

The venerable youth hostel – invented a century ago in Germany – has come along way from the dumpy dorms and lumpy bunk beds of yore. Shannon Smith takes a look at some of Berlins best cheap sleeps.
Four years ago architect Pierre Ammon and geographer Jörg Schöpfel said goodbye to their day jobs and teamed up to realise a long-time dream: opening their own hostel.

Within months, the two had founded EastSeven, situated just north of Berlins über-hip Mitte district. Despite what appeared to be a saturated budget travel market at the time, their project quickly became one of many modern hostels sprouting up in the centre of the German capital.

"Berlin is booming, says Ammon. The secret is you can survive here quite cheaply.

But EastSeven and its contemporaries are certainly not your fathers Jugendherberge – even if Germany was the birthplace for the youth hostel movement back in 1909.

After the teacher Richard Schirrmann first came up with the idea of offering a safe and affordable place for young travellers to stay in the town of Altena in North Rhine-Westphalia, the dorm-style youth hostel concept spread like wildfire around the globe.

Of course, many modern hostels in Berlin and elsewhere in Germany have long since ditched rickety bunk beds to morph into slick budget hotels often catering to Europes EasyJet set rather than your typical backpacker crowd.

And with 62 hostels competing for customers in Berlin alone, its perhaps no surprise that four of Germanys top-five rated hostels on booking website Hostelworld.com call the capital home – and three of them are even located within a few blocks of one another in Mitte.

I think this is the reason why the top five [hostels] are all in Berlin. The more votes you get the better rating you'll have – if you do a good job, of course.

But with hundreds of hostels and budget hotels on offer, Berlin leads Europe in this kind of tourism, according to Christian Tänzler of Berlin Tourismus Marketing GmbH, which runs the citys official tourism website VisitBerlin.de.

Factors already fuelling the industry in Europe such as cheap flights and communication technology pair well with Berlins general affordability, Tänzler said.

Hostel managers themselves attest to a sort of demographic shift in the budget travellers filtering through their locales.

Roughly one third of Berlins tourists are under the age of 30, according to Tänzler. Boasting unique music, art and clubbing scenes, the capital city draws a decidedly young and distinct brand of budget traveller. Tänzler says this combined with the citys unmatched cost-benefit ratio in Europe gives it a pronounced advantage.

But Tänzler says the number of youthful visitors to the city also contributes to its long-term tourism sustainability, since the target market grows with the times.

People who may have backpacked through the city as young adults are that much more likely to return, sometimes with families, sometimes a decade later, he explains.

And thats where the modern hostel concept shines with plenty of private rooms and stylish design all at an affordable price.

Schöpfel and Ammon apparently have given customers a lot of what they liked at EastSeven: Hostelworld.com users have repeatedly voted EastSeven among the top contenders in the world for Friendliness, Cleanliness and Location – not to mention Best Hostel in Germany for 2008.

My mother shouted at me: 'I don't believe it. Cleanest hostel? No way!' recalls Schöpfel.

Those responsible for Germanys top-ranked hostels, however, still insist that one should never underestimate the importance of good, old-fashioned hospitality.

"We try to win our customers at the reception," says Jim Hadfield of the nearby Circus Hostel, which won second place for Best Hostel in Germany at the 2008 HOSCARS.

"We have very good staff that really enjoy their job," he continued. "People who work here get praised often. 99% of the time customers are having a good time, and that gets back to the staff."

Meanwhile, EastSeven owners Ammon and Schöpfel continue to host Monday evening barbeques, twice-daily cleanings and personal meet-and-greets with guests.

Would Richard Schirrmann still consider such a place a hostel? A century later theres no way to know, but the mastermind behind the Jugendherberge would certainly have no quibble with quality accommodation easy on the wallet.

Das ist jedenfalls das Ergebnis der Internet-Abstimmung bei Hostelworld.com, einer der wichtigsten internationalen Booking-Plattformen im Netz. Bewertet wurden Sauberkeit, Mitarbeiter, Lage, Charakter, Sicherheit und Spaßfaktor.
Die EastSeven-Betreiber, Jörg Schöpfel (42) und Pierre Ammon (46), haben die Urkunde stolz in den Flur gehängt. Neben all die anderen. "Hier ist es ruhig, freundlich und sauber", sagt Petter Hohmann , ein 27-jähriger Norweger, der in der Lounge sitzt. Mindestens zehn Mal war der Rechtsanwalt schon im EastSeven. Er könnte sich auch ein Hotel leisten. "Aber warum? Dort sitz ich allein beim Frühstück", sagt er, "hier quatsche ich mit Leuten aus Australien oder Amerika".
Ob man in ein Hostel geht, sei nicht nur eine Frage des Geldes, sagt Ammon, "sondern auch eine des Lifestyles." Wegen der Wirtschaftskrise machen sich Schöpfel und Ammon bisher wenig Sorgen. "Berlin gilt weiterhin bei jungen Leuten als super hip", sagt Schöpfel. "Hier muss man mal gewesen sein."

Die Internetseite sei aufgrund der Anzahl der Zugriffe sowie der abgegebenen Stimmen das wichtigste Hostel-Bewertungsforum im Netz (Eintrag bei Hostelworld). Geld für den ersten Preis gibt's aber nicht, die Prämie hat rein ideelen Wert - die Überreichung der Urkunde muss reichen.

Wichtig für die Bewertung sind Sauberkeit, Mitarbeiter, Lage, Charakter, Sicherheit und Spaßfaktor. Das EastSeven Berlin Hostel in der Schwedter Straße 7 verfügt über 25 Zimmer mit Bettkapazitäten von einer bis acht Personen. Zudem gibt es mehrere geschlechtergtrennte Badezimmer auf jeder Etage, eine Selbstversorgerküche, ein Lounge-Wohnzimmer und einen Garten mit Grillplatz.

Und dass die Gäste sich wohl fühlen, ist

das Hostel eröffnet, in einem sanierten
Haus mitten im Szene-Viertel Prenz-
lauer Berg. Die Lage ist ein Selbstläufer,
für alles andere müssen sie sorgen.
In Berlin sind Hostels, diese Mi-
schung aus Jugendherberge und Hotel,
in den letzten Jahren wie Pilze aus dem
Boden geschossen. Eine Stadt, die vor
allem auch junge Leute aus der ganzen
Welt anzieht, kann offenbar gar nicht
genug preiswerte Übernachtungsmög-
lichkeiten anbieten.

Es gibt sie in den Szene-Bezirken und
an Ausfallstraßen,in Altbauten und Plattenbauten
und in jeder Größe bis hin zu Bettenburgen.
Es gibt sagt JörgSchöpfel im Grun-
de genommen drei Arten von Hostels:
die Party-Hostels, die Gruppen-Hos-
tels und kleine Häuser wie unseres. mit
individueller Atmosphäre und wenig
Trubel. Das EastSeven ist eine kleine
Oase mitten in der Großstadt. Die
großen Häuser, die Party- und Grup-
pen-Hostels (vor allem für Schulklas-
sen) werden meistens von Hosteletten be-
trieben. Die kleineren Hostels in den
Berliner Szene-Vierteln sind nicht selten
Existenzgründungen von Leuten,
die ursprünglich nicht aus der Branche
kommen: Schöpfel ist gelernte Geo-
graph und Stadtplaner miteinem Auf-
bau-Studium Tourismui, sein Partner
Ammon Architekt. Sie haben ihr Hos-
tel selbst umgebaut und ausgestattet.

Das EastSeven hat insgesamt 60 Bet-
ten, verteilt auf Ein- bis Vierbettzim-
mer und einen Schlafsaal mit acht
Betten. In den Zimmern gibt es nichts
außer Bett und Schrank, die Bäder sind
auf dem Flur und sechs bis acht Gäste
teilen sich ein Bad.
Im Winter kostet derzeit ein Bett zwischen
13und 30 Euro, im Sommer 15 bis 35Euro.
Es gibt eine Lounge (in der auch drei Compu-
ter stehen), die schon erwähnte Küche
und WLAN im ganzen Haus.

Im Sommer können die Gäste im
liebevoll gestalteten Hofgarten früh-
stücken oder grillen. 80 Prozent der
Gäste kommen aus dem Ausland. Sie

`Flashpackers' with money to burn are opting not to waste it on luxe accommodation

There is a reason ambitious young directors call their sadistic horror films Hostel and not, for example, Best Western.
The hostel, in the popular imagination, is dark and grimy, frequented not only by hard-drinking university students but also dubious men like the one sleeping on the bottom bunk in front of me when, on a sunny afternoon in Athens four years ago, I walked into my first hostel room.
His legs were hairy. His head was shaved. He looked, my friend Uri and I agreed when he was out of earshot, like a serial killer – the very personification of the hostel of horrors.
Except, I learned an hour later, he was an English teacher from Kansas, and he had just spent a year teaching in Japan, and we had a 45-minute conversation about life, and he was lovely.
Which was fitting. Increasingly, I would learn, so are hostels.
When Eric Balmer took over the popular Balmer's Herberge in Interlaken, Switzerland, in 1970, "the international youth hostel in Switzerland was a kind of army camp," Balmer says.
He laughs at the memory – "army blankets and regulations: take your shoes off, turn the lights off" – in part because he'd just spent about $400,000 installing a "high-ropes course" on local treetops, part of more than $4 million in improvements he's made to the place over 38 years.
The era of the cheap and dirty hostel, says Balmer, "is gone. It's completely gone."
St. Christopher's Inns, which operates hostels in Britain, France, Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium, offers female-only floors with "little luxuries like extra fluffy towels, hair dryers (and) nice soaps," says Rob Savage, who edits the chain's blogs, e-zines, and podcasts.
Toronto's Canadiana Backpackers Inn, at Widmer and Adelaide Sts., provides pancake breakfasts and barbecue dinners, karaoke sessions and seats at CBC tapings.
Some have wireless Internet service.

That summer in Greece, when I ordered a gyro for lunch at the Pink Palace in Corfu, the man behind the counter jokingly asked me if I wanted the lamb with strawberries: he had noticed me eating 30 of them at the Palace's sumptuous free omelette-and-fruit breakfast that morning.
In Britain, says Hostelworld.com editor Colm Hanratty, "some people still think a hostel is a place for homeless people." But perceptions are changing.
That's because hostels are too, thanks partly to the Internet, which has publicized criticism of them. The dissatisfied hostel visitor of the 1970s might write an angry diary entry; the dissatisfied hostel visitor of 2008 might write an angry blog entry or – horror of horrors for the modern hostel owner – issue a negative rating on a site like Hostelworld, where hostels are ranked on their "character," security, location, staff, fun and cleanliness. Since such websites often account for over a third of hostels' bookings – and sometimes more than half – poor online feedback can rarely be tolerated.

"We are really keen on good ratings," says Jörg Schöpfel, who has co-owned Berlin's EastSeven hostel for three years. "And we take seriously the stuff people say in complaints. If we get a bad rating, or if we see somewhere – in a blog or wherever – a bad comment about EastSeven, we contact the people and ask them what went wrong, to do better."
This year, for instance, they put in double curtains in each room because people complained that it was difficult to sleep in the summertime.

"The feedback," says Canadiana owner Chris Morgan, "keeps you on your toes."
So do "flashpackers," a growing group of travellers who have money to burn. They stay in hostels for the social experience, but still want comfort, even luxury.
"The number of flashpackers with state-of-the-art laptops, professional cameras and significant spending power increases all the time," Savage says.
I was aghast two years ago when a friend said he was going "backpacking" with a suitcase on wheels. Turns out he's not alone: "Backpacks," St. Christopher's Savage says, "now come with wheels, extendable handles and reinforced pockets to protect laptops."
With upscale travellers demanding "more, more, more and more," says Balmer, owners are constantly forced to improve. They must also accommodate older hostellers, known as "grey gappers," who find hostels allow them to meet more people. Some have even added private and ensuite rooms to meet the demand.
While hostels used to take the view "over 25 and you're out," Morgan says Canadiana hosted a 78-year-old German last May.
Of course, the horror-show hostel experience still exists. Hostelworld, Hostelz.com, and travellers' forums have lots of scathing reviews. ("Didn't dare take a shower – gross!" "Is this Amsterdam or Gitmo?") And even the best-rated hostels get criticized on occasion for perceived cleanliness problems or rude staff.
But with every passing day – and, indeed, every negative online rating – they just keep getting better.

East Seven Berlin Hostel, Prenzlauer Berg: Eines der wohl charmantesten Hostels der Stadt pflegt seinen dezenten Auftritt in einer Seitenstraße der Kastanienallee. Der familiäre Eindruck beginnt bereits an der Rezeption, das riesige Wohnzimmer mit den vielen Plüschsesseln erinnert an eine WG voller Austauschstudenten. Größere Gruppen müssen draußen bleiben, was der intimen Atmosphäre des neu eröffneten Hauses mit dem pittoresken Innenhof entgegenkommt. Doppelzimmer kosten zwischen 40 und 46 Euro.

Opened just over a year ago, this central Berlin hostel is great value for money. The mix of private rooms (with shared showers) and dorms feature "good Ikea" styling and, unusually for some hostels, there's plenty of daylight in all the rooms. EastSeven Berlin Hostel

The EastSeven, on the border between Berlin's popular Mitte and Prenzlauer Berg districts is one of the city's newer hostels, opened in April 2005 - and has already been voted world's seventh best hostel by users of a popular hostel-booking website.

EastSeven markets itself as a more-laid back style of hostel - no stag- or hen parties please, and you won't be mixing with groups of school children. It offers single, double, twin, and triple rooms along with spacious comfortable dorms (4-8 beds, with room lockers provided).

Like Leonardo DiCaprio said in that movie based on that book about that beach: “Never refuse an invitation, never resist the unfamiliar, never fail to be polite and never outstay a welcome.” Even though Berlin is short of beaches (mind you, there are a few), invitations are plenty, and you better not refuse them, because you’ll miss out. As for outstaying a welcome, I don’t think it’s possible as no matter your language, no matter your background, you can be one of them. Just like Kennedy was.

I hit Berlin on a sunny April afternoon and dropped off my bags at East Seven, which isn’t an amputated boy band but a cool little hostel sitting snugly between the Mitte and Prenzlauer Berg hoods. (www.eastseven.de)

When you picture a youth hostel, images of Birkenstock-shod backpackers sleeping on ripped sofas may come to mind. Now there are designer hostels, aimed at "flashpackers," who want cheap but contemporary lodging.
In Berlin, East Seven (www. eastseven.de) has beds starting at $16, a garden area with coffee and beer available and even baby beds.
In London, YHA (www.yha. org.uk), which operates more than 200 hostels in England and Wales, recently spent about $3.4 million renovating its Earls Court Hostel. Not only does the hostel now have a cafe serving cappuccinos and lattes, it also has a lounge with a flat-screen TV, a courtyard garden and Wi-Fi and dial-up Internet connections. Double, twin-bedded rooms start at $114 a night, while those willing to sleep in one of the two communal, 10-bed, single-sex rooms need pay only about $34.
In Edinburgh, the Scottish Youth Hostels Association has opened a "stylish and modern hostel" with 302 beds within walking distance of Edinburgh Castle.
The hostel, the Edinburgh Central (www.edinburgh central.org), has a restaurant open from morning until night, serving wine, beer and food (no main course exceeds $12), plasma-screen lobby televisions and both Wi-Fi and Internet stations. Beds start at $30, single rooms at $50, twins at $74, family rooms at $134.
And in Prague, the Czech Inn (www.czech-inn.com) has beds in dorm rooms starting at $19, private rooms at $26, and there are even a few apartments – all decorated stylishly, of course.
