ON RAGE: Film, Exhibition & Discourse

March 10th, 2010

Berlin 2010

Berlin 2010

At Haus der Kulturen der Welt… 14 march-09 may: Opening 13 march

This event is exploring the culture of rage. Considering, is there a new kind of rage, emerged out of all kinds of economic and political crises and states of emergency?
ON RAGE will take a closer look at both the deconstructive part of rage aswell as at its transformitive potential into something positive and constructive.

The program constantly shifts its focus by allowing genres to interplay: The exhibition formulates artistic statements that intervene in the discussions, readings and talks. We are dealing here with sublimated, condensed rage. Lectures held every Wednesday draw up a contemporary phenomenology of this primary effect within a political, philosophical, and postcolonial context. Films take on the subject of rage associatively and performances open up other approaches to the artistic and theoretical positions. Visitors have the unique opportunity to explore their own creative potential in “Rage Rooms” . Here they can take a look at the works of the exhibition in the light of Berlin’s social issues. The program concludes with a Rage Summit“: dialogues, open discussions and ReReadings of key texts – from Bataille to Che Guevara and Darwin to Sloterdijk.

With works by: Shoja Azari (Iran), Jimmie Durham (USA), Regina José Galindo (Guatemala), Tadeusz Kantor (PL), Klara Lidén (S), Michael Rakowitz (USA), Reloading Images (Iran / USA, I / UK, Iran / D, D, Iran / USA, Egypt), Seher Shah (USA) and a specially developed “Discursive Architecture” by ifau (D).
Curated by Valerie Smith

More information on the exhibition:
Eight artistic statements protesting intolerable conditions, ranging from the “dead” classroom by the extraordinary Polish artist Tadeusz Kantor to Jimmie Durham’s unmasking of America’s founding myth in “Building a Nation”, to Regina José Galindo’s opening performance: her own gold teeth become the metaphor not only for the exploitation of Latin America, but also call forth associations of the brutality of the “Third Reich”. The works take on today’s global reality – not by reflecting or reproducing it, but by distilling its essence. Thus, Michael Rakowitz, son of Iraqi-Jewish immigrants to the U.S., creates from Arab packaging materials a replica of the Ishtar Gate (”May the Arrogant Not Prevail”), which in present-day Iraq has turned into a tourist attraction for American soldiers. A papier-mâché copy of a copy, since the “real” Ishtar Gate has been located in Berlin since 1930. The work is one of four commissioned works created especially for this exhibition.

Every Monday the EastSeven Berlin Hostel cooks for her guests. The food is simple, but good (and for free), the atmosphere is friendly and the night still young…

“A troop of monkeys celebrate a feast, a panther wanders across a snowy Alpine landscape and a pack of white wolves surround a buffalo dripping blood in a manicured French garden. At first glance Walton Ford’s large-scale animal watercolour paintings evoke prints by French and British colonial-era illustrators from the 19th century. After closer examination however, they reveal a pictorial universe of complex and disturbing allusions. The various tigers, lions, birds and primates that populate the life-size pictures appear as vivacious protagonists locked in allegorical struggles. The resulting combination of historical fact, natural history inquiry and surreal imaginings give rise to Walton Ford’s brilliant ‘Bestiarium’.”  from 23.01 till 24.5.2010

100° BERLIN – THE 7TH LONG WEEKEND OF FREE THEATRE: 4-7 March

February 24th, 2010

Berlin 2010

Berlin

The 7th edition of “100° Berlin” will be celebrated for four days:

More than 120 free Berlin-based theatre and performance groups show their plays, (lecture) performances or installations in an hourly rhythm, making the public sweat, as a minimum of three performances can be attended simultaneously!

The inauguration evening will present, among others, a  Error” Mittelhammer Langenbein will not only thematise the all-determining fate, but also the mysteries of Berlin’s underground. Many other productions will add to this topic, for example the musical stage version of “Paul und Paula – eine Legende” by theaterkosmos 53. And with dolls at hand Das Helmi won’t be far away – it will be showing “Am Kotti – Vier Fäuste für einen Turnschuh”, developed in collaboration with the Niederlausitz Elementary School.

With “Der Indiensimulator” the Flinntheater serves a Masala made up with theatre, performance and inter-cultural training, while Tanja Knauf, Stella Maxeiner and their guest Robin Arthur from Forced Entertainment ask the question whether they would prefer to be “Blind oder taub” (“Blind or deaf”). The performers from skart reflect on the micro- macro cosmos “love” and add up a collage of self-composed songs, lyrics and costumes to become the multimedia performance “Galactic Gigolo”. Along with two musicians the author Darja Stocker drives “Gedankenslalom zum Widerstand”, and in “Aufstellen” Riebort/Merten examine the artistic-cathartic potential of Hamlet’s pedigree.

Wolfram Sander et al. embark on a journey to their own roots: In the anti-revue “Wenn ich einmal groß bin… oder wie wir wurden was wir sind” they examine the dreams and imaginations that children have about their own future. On the other hand Peng Palast!, whose production “HamletMASSIV” is about three unemployed brothers, ask very contemporary questions, and subsequently half of their texts will be improvised on the basis of daily news.

Naturally this year will also have a conversation every evening with two renowned midnight speakers, offering the possibility to relax a bit after so much input: On Thursday the Maiden Monsters from Berlin, Tokyo and Rapid City/South Dakota will open the party marathon of this year’s Festival according to the motto: “Don’t fall in love with the guitarist – FUCK the guitarist!”. Those who are used to taking a Sunday stroll at the flea market are already familiar with Joe Hatchiban, the bearpit karaoke-star from Mauerpark. Now also at HAU will he provide for his incomparably good mood and hand over the microphone to people who love to sing – don’t be shy!
